Protection gaps that appear after a mortgage remortgage
Changing lenders often changes the life cover conversation — yet many households leave old policies untouched.
A remortgage can quietly leave life cover and income protection misaligned. The new loan amount, term, and interest rate may no longer match the sum assured on an older policy. Some lender-tied cover ends when you leave the previous deal entirely.
Income protection is easy to overlook in the rush of rate shopping. If your household depends on one salary to meet the new monthly payment, a short period of illness can create pressure that life cover alone does not solve.
Critical illness cover sits in a different category again. It pays a lump sum on diagnosis of specified conditions, which can clear a mortgage or fund treatment and time away from work. Whether it belongs in your plan depends on dependents, savings, and employer sick-pay terms.
After any remortgage, list the new repayment schedule beside existing policies. If the numbers no longer line up, a short protection review with an adviser can prevent an expensive gap from sitting unnoticed for years.
